Considering the contribution Joost made to last year’s series, I guess it should have come as no surprise that, yet again, the guy has gone above and beyond. And yet….when THIS arrived in my inbox….well…judge for yourself…
Suffice to say…gobsmacked. In a very, VERY good way! When I posed this challenge I didn’t expect “Zebra” to crop up as a source of inspiration, lol!
But humour me for a moment. Take a minute (or several) to absorb the striking visuals of this make and then…look past them…at the detail. Look closely at the photo below and you’ll see a patch pocket AND a welt pocket. Pattern matched and camouflaged within those zebra stripes…
Those stripes are irregular. Wavy. (Joost actually studied how a zebra’s stripes actually wrap around it’s torso in order to replicate them on this make). Which makes pattern matching across seams all the more tricky. Especially across a sleeve cap…and yet!!
There is SO much vision, skill, planning, and attention to detail in this jacket. I am genuinely at a loss for words…
And just to prove Joost is not actually Mr Serious…LOVE this pic, lol! I am imagining his photographer directing him to “make like a zebra in the wild being chased down by lions”, ha ha! (Not sure if he actually meant for me to post this one or not. But my excuse is it’s also a very good angle to illustrate the thought that has gone into the placement of those stripes).
If you want to see the before & in process photos, ( and I strongly urge you to check this out in detail) plus Joost’s thoughts on the process, (and LOADS more pics) full details are over on Joost’s blog.
Stay tuned. We have a whole month of refashioning inspiration coming your way courtesy of a phenomenal line up of stitchers.
If you fancy getting your refashion on, but are in two minds about whether to enter this year’s community challenge;
- Check out our pinterest board for inspiration
- Check out the amazing prize package (yes you could win all that!)
- Go grab a suit and dive in!
….If you haven’t familiarised yourself with what the actual challenge is yet, essentially we want you to refashion an old, unworn or unloved suit! Simple as that! What counts as a suit you say? Definition here!
Man’s suit. Ladies suit. Doesn’t matter. Interpret how you see fit. If you’re breathing new life into a suit that would otherwise go unworn or be thrown away, THAT’S what counts.
BUT, if you want to be in with a chance of winning one of these amazing prize packages you’ll need to SHARE that refashion with us in one of the following ways:
- On Instagram: Share a pic using the hashtags #therefashioners2017 and #suitsyou
- On Facebook: There is a community board here where you can post your makes (You will need to request an invite to join)
Only entries shared via the above 2 methods will be entered into the competition. Closing date for entries is 31st October 2017 Midnight GMT.
Good luck!!! Get refashioning. And I’ll see you tomorrow at the LAUNCH of The Refashioners 2017 for a whole month of inspiration to get you started! Sooooo freakin’ excited!!
mind blown, HOW DID HE DO THIS?!?!?!?!
He stubbornly refused to give up 😉
This is truly amazing and original. I can only begin to imagine the work and planning that has gone into this garment.
Thank you Helen. Portia has a way or torturing the best out of me :))
wow. I have hair and sewing envy
Actually, the hair took much longer to grow than the jacket took to make 😉
Joost is amazing. This jacket is amazing… My refashion is going to be much more low key.
You are too kind Lori 🙂 thank you x
That’s commitment! !
Better to whole-ass one thing, than half-ass two things 😉
The best kind of inspiration. While I am not going to reach so high, I am totally thrilled and excited by this high-wire act of gorgeous artistry. Congratulations and thank you for sending your energy our way!!
Wow, that’s some high praise. Thank you so much Erika, it means a lot to me. x
Amaaaaazing!!
