Nothing beats experience, right? So when Farzana from The Amazings offered me the opportunity to try out some of their new online classes; well, I was in like a shot, of course! The Amazings brings together passionate and experienced makers with passionate and creative learners. Their makers, or “elders” as they refer to them (because all of them have the kind of experience that only years spent honing their craft can bring), come from all walks of life and are experts in all manner of crafts. From creative writing to patchwork. From jewelry making to joinery. Currently based in London, they have been putting learners together with teachers through their range of “in person” classes across London since 2012. Now they are branching out to incorporate online classes….
There are currently 10 online classes up and ready to go with new classes being added weekly. You can learn the techniques for using silver metal clay Debbie, make a needle felted cutie with Sue, or learn some techniques for refashioning men’s shirts with Judith, among other things. The one that really grabbed my attention was the silver metal clay taught by Debbie….
Originally I wanted to have something made to show you. But turns out that this is not the silver coloured polymer clay that I thought it was. But actual 99% pure silver clay! So I’ve got to get my hands on some before I can get going. But I’m hooked already; and will sooo be trying this out in the not too distant future. So watch this space! Debbie certainly knows her stuff and goes right into the background and history of this amazing material as well as demonstrating the techniques and possibilities. I love this format. I’ve never taken an online class before. But I love the concept of being able to dip in and out of the class at my leisure. The “schtick” with these classes is that you watch Debbie talking a student through the process; with the student “standing in” for you or I; and asking the kind of questions you or I might ask. Anything you don’t understand? You can contact Debbie directly….and she gets back to you personally!
I like this format; and the idea of the “elders” passing on their knowledge and ensuring that their craft is carried forward by a new generation of makers; is one that really appeals to me on many levels.
Sooooo, if you fancy trying out an online class yourself, for FREE, then The Amazings are offering all readers the chance to do just that. Just click here to sign up and get started!!
Full disclosure: Obviously The Amazings approached me, offered me a free course, and in exchange, asked me to review it. In a way, I feel like I should point out the negatives in order to give a “balanced” view. But I honestly can’t think of any negatives. All views expressed here are my own and in no way influenced by being given a freebie! I genuinely like this format and what they are trying to do in terms of putting learners together with teachers. And I thoroughly recommend you go check it out and make up your own mind 😉
